Viva Voce vs Dissertation Defense: What's the Difference?

The UK viva voce and the US dissertation defense are the same idea — a final oral examination where you defend your thesis to expert examiners — but the format differs. A viva is usually a closed, presentation-free interrogation by two examiners; a US defense usually opens with a public talk before the committee questions you in private.

Same purpose, different staging

Both exams exist to confirm one thing: that the work is yours, that you understand it deeply, and that it makes an original contribution to your field. What changes between systems is the staging — who is in the room, whether you present, and how long it runs.

The terminology tracks geography. "Viva voce" (Latin for "by live voice"), usually shortened to "viva", is the term across the UK, Ireland, and much of the Commonwealth. "Dissertation defense" or "thesis defense" is standard in the United States and Canada. The underlying assessment is closely related, so preparation overlaps heavily.

The UK viva voce

  • Usually closed — no audience. Just you and the examiners, sometimes with a non-participating chair or your supervisor observing.
  • Two examiners is the common pattern: one internal (from your institution) and one external (from another university).
  • Often no formal presentation. Many vivas open straight into questions, though some examiners ask for a short summary.
  • Length varies widely — commonly one to three hours, occasionally longer.
  • Outcomes are graded: pass with no corrections, minor corrections, major corrections, revise and resubmit, award of a lower degree (e.g. MPhil), or fail. Minor or major corrections are the most common results.

The US dissertation defense

  • Usually opens with a public presentation — often 20 to 45 minutes — that may be open to your department or the public.
  • A committee of several faculty (commonly four or five), including your advisor, then questions you, frequently in a closed session.
  • The committee deliberates privately and delivers the result, typically pass with required revisions.
  • Your advisor is on the committee and is generally invested in your success — a structural difference from the external-examiner model.
  • Format is set by your department and committee, so confirm the specifics with your program.

What this means for your preparation

Whichever format you face, the questions rhyme: justify your methodology, defend your contribution, explain the choices you made and the limitations you accepted. The difference is mostly in delivery — a US defense rewards rehearsing a clear presentation, while a viva rewards being ready to think aloud under sustained, unscripted questioning.

That is why practising the questions matters more than memorising answers. A mock defense lets you rehearse defending your work to examiners who, unlike your advisor, have no stake in passing you.

Frequently asked questions

Is a viva harder than a dissertation defense?
Neither is inherently harder — they test the same understanding. A viva can feel more intense because it is usually closed and presentation-free, putting you in sustained dialogue with examiners. A US defense front-loads a presentation, which some candidates find steadies their nerves.
Do I present in a viva?
Often not. Many UK vivas begin directly with questions, though some examiners ask for a brief summary of your thesis and contribution. Confirm the expectation with your examiners or supervisor beforehand.
Can you fail a dissertation defense or viva?
An outright fail is uncommon, especially where your supervisor judged the thesis ready to submit. Far more common outcomes are passing with minor or major corrections that you complete after the exam.
